BORIS VOM LELBACHER HEXENTEICH
SCHH III - W.P.O. - F.H. - A.D. - T.D.

January 3, 1984 - June 15, 1991

Boris arrived in Oregon from Germany on December 24, 1983; what a Christmas gift. He was an untrained and undisciplined dog with strong drives and instincts that were exhibited in continuous motion, and his regal appearance commanded attention. He was purchased as an untrained dog at a cost of $1,800 which included shipping from Germany. He began his formal training by attending Schutzhund Club meetings. Schutzhund is a German dogsport that requires passing a test in the disciplines of tracking, obedience, and protection. In addition to training for Schutzhund competition, K-9 Boris received on the job training searching large areas and buildings for hidden suspects. This training method proved to be very time consuming as compared to the other K-9 candidates that were purchased as trained dogs with earned titles.

Sergeant Carlson did all of the training with K-9 Boris and put all of the titles on him. They received his Schh I title on March 2, 1986, Schh II on April 12, 1986, and Schh III on September 13, 1986, and before K-9 Boris retired he had received three Schh III titles. In 1987 K-9 Boris was the 2nd place qualifier for the United States Police K-9 team, competed in Germany, and was the high scoring dog on the team with 98 points in tracking and 99 points in obedience. In 1989 he was the Pacific Northwest Regional SCHh III Champion with the high obedience score in the trial. He also competed in the 1990 National Police Dog trial but was hospitalized with a bleeding intestinal infection and could not finish the trial. In 1992 he passed the highest tracking test in schutzhund and received the F.H. title.

K-9 Boris made his first capture on July 26, 1984 by tracking a suspect who ran from a stolen car at Main & 58th St.. The suspect was located several blocks away hiding on a porch. When Sergeant Carlson got into a fight with the suspect, K-9 Boris just watched. But later in his career K-9 Boris subdued a crazed attacking suspect armed with a knife, spear, and 4x4, saving his handler from the possibility of a serious injury and the suspect from a possible gunshot wound. His handler received a medal of valor for this incident, but the real hero was K-9 Boris. During his police career he was responsible for finding suspects wanted for murder, robbery, burglary, escape, auto theft, and assisted many other police agencies in the Lane County area. In the last month of his career he located a prison escapee hiding in heavy brush near Creswell for the Lane County Sheriff and a parole violator hiding under a house for the Eugene Police. Since his retirement he has sired two litters of puppies.

K-9 Boris was credited with 63 captures during his career which resulted in recovered property valued at 17,369.74.
