Welcome to the McKenzie River Schutzhund training group's web page, we are located in the Pacific Northwest,
Springfield/Eugene area of Oregon. Schutzhund is a German word
meaning "protection dog", but it is a triathlon dog sport
that involves training dogs for tracking, obedience, and protection titles. Schutzhund is designed to test the instincts and drives
of a dog and see if it acts like a German Shepherd. Interest in the Schutzhund sport began in our area in the early
1980's when a group of people consisting of professional dog trainers, police officers, and people with an assortment of dogs were
brought together by an advertisement in the pet section of the local newspaper.
We are Schutzhund enthusiasts that have a passion for dog training. It takes a lot of
time and energy, in addition to regularly scheduled training, to become proficient in Schutzhund. Currently all of our dogs, except one, are H.O.T
. (handler owner trained) dogs, an accomplishment we are proud of. Our goals are training our dogs,
entering trials, obtaining titles for our dogs, and having some fun and camaraderie along the way. We mostly have German Shepherd's
but are not opposed to training with any breed of dog that demonstrates the correct temperament for the sport of Schutzhund.
Prospective additions to our group are evaluated to determine if we can help you and your dog be successful
in Schutzhund and if you will harmoniously intermingle with our group.
If you do not attend group training, trials and seminars, and regularly train tracking and obedience, you will not fit in with our
group. We do not train personal protection dogs, our dogs are motivated athletic working sport dogs.
We are not like a typical club where you pay and expect a Training Director instructs you; you need to ask for help if you don't understand
something. No training is better than bad training.
You can't do schutzhund alone, you need a great support group and a good dog.
Dog training begins with an understanding of K9 Psychology.
Membership with any of the National Clubs listed below is a requirement for training with our group.
Thanks for taking time to learn about us and our dogs.
